When I had my first baby, I had no idea of what I really needed. I researched about the best baby essentials at the time, must have baby items I couldn’t live without, baby health care items, baby gear, everything you can imagine. Guess what? I ended up buying almost everything the internet told me I had to have.
Every first time parent just wants to make sure they’re well prepared and they have everything baby needs.
The result? I didn’t use half of all that stuff we bought. We spent a lot of unnecessary money towards our first baby. That’s why I came up with a list of 5 baby essentials that I used and would buy again or that I wish I had known when I had my babies.
5 MUST HAVE BABY ITEMS
I could go on forever talking about hundreds of baby items that I find useful and that I think are very much needed.
However, for this particular post I will focus on key items from different categories that I would recommend to my best friend! Some of them I used and some of them I just deeply wish I had known about at the time.
- Electronic Nasal Aspirator: when our first son was born, I had seen a lot of people sharing about this nasal aspirator, which you had to suck through a tube to get rid of baby’s knot.
Between my husband and I, we couldn’t figure out who would volunteer for such delicate role… ahem.
So we chose an electronic nasal aspirator and that was the best decision we could’ve made at the time. We used it so many times when he was congested.
It was very easy to use and it got the job done super fast.
Just recently, our youngest son got a runny nose and we needed it, but when we tried using it, it wouldn’t go on. My husband inspected it and realized we let it get wet inside, where the battery was located.
I ran to the store to get a new one and they didn’t have it. Because of our urgent need, I ended up getting the manual one I mentioned in the beginning. Since I was able to try both, I can tell you the difference! The manual one literally takes your breath away. Yup. Not the best option at all.
Go with the electronic one and make sure you store it in a dry place and you’re set for life.
STILL IN THE BABY HEALTH CATEGORY
2. Evivo Probiotics: when I had my first son, I thought everything a baby needed to be healthy would be found in breastmilk. I think all moms think so, because it’s what’s heard.
According to recent studies, the vast majority of today’s moms are no longer passing the beneficial B. infantis bacteria to their babies at birth. Additional studies also show that babies, who don’t receive this good gut bacteria in infancy could be at higher risk for eczema, allergies, obesity, and diabetes.
I really wish I had known this before. It’s a huge deal in the baby health department and I wanted to make sure I included it in my baby essentials list. It’s very easy to use and you only need to give it to baby once a day.
It comes in sachets, which are the exact amount you need for the day. You mix the powder with 5ml of breast milk and feed it to baby in a syringe, which also comes in the package. That’s it.
By adding this probiotic to baby’s daily feeding routine, we’re contributing to their long term health.
I was curious about what exactly it did when it comes to baby health, so I did some digging myself. Here are a couple of the benefits:
- Maximizes every bit of breast milk’s nutrients to feed baby;
- Restores the levels of B. infantis in baby’s gut;
- Protects baby’s gut microbiome for a healthy metabolism and immune system;
- Defends baby health against bad bacteria linked to eczema, allergies, diabetes and obesity.

BABY ESSENTIALS: GEAR
3. Baby carrier: I was always a stroller mama, but man… a baby carrier can be handy in so many situations.
I traveled across the continent with my two kids, by myself. The stroller was my best friend in the airports, but when it was time to enter the airplane, the baby carrier was so helpful. I had to fold the stroller, hold 2 bags, my toddler’s pillow and blanket, our DSLR camera… There was so much stuff, that having him in the carrier was a must. I couldn’t have done this trip without a carrier.
Now, if you don’t travel that much, you must be thinking… Why in the world would I need a carrier for? I could go on all day naming hundreds of situations when only a carrier can do the job, but I’ll save you time.
Let’s name a few: Going on walks where the surface isn’t even, going on hikes, grocery shopping with more than child, going to crowded events or places where there isn’t enough space for a stroller, etc.
BATH TIME BABY ESSENTIALS
4. Newborn bath tub: When I had my first son, the first couple of baths were very challenging. He was so tiny and fragile, it was hard to hold him and keep him still in the huge tub I had.
When my second son was born, I made sure to get him a newborn bath tub or adaptor.
It was the best thing I did!
I got the Puj tub, which goes on the bathroom sink. By this, you can guess it’s pretty tiny. This was actually one of its great qualities. Because it’s so small, it keeps baby’s body from moving so much and it helps you feel more secure when bathing them in the first few months.
NEWBORN BABY SLEEP
5. Zipadeezip: You might have never heard of this, but we saw it on Shark Tank and it was one of the best things we used for both our babies!
In the first month or two, baby sleeps very well in a swaddler. After that, they start to move a lot and the swaddle doesn’t work anymore. When they would start getting mobile, we changed the swaddle for the zipadeezip. It worked like nothing else!
The secret to it is that it has a slight resistance in the closed sleeve. This allows baby to move around freely while still providing the enclosed, cozy sensation of the womb.
